Lessons learnt

Took the little guy to see Dr Mel today. He has a gooey eye as a result of his cold, he’s got some red rashy bits in his neck folds, and I asked Dr Mel about transitioning to full formula feeding. She said to continue wiping his eye with water and to apply canestan cream to his neck bits. As for the boobs, the right one is a bit lumpy but not overly sore so I’m to apply cold compresses until the milk stops. I managed to get Fraser to feed off it a little tonight, enough to relieve it. I guess it’ll just stop producing soon enough. Dr Mel asked me how I felt about it and I said I felt a bit gulty about it but she said I’d done so well to get this far and that we had a happy mum and a healthy baby so not to worry. She is right but I’m still coming to terms with the choices I made it the early weeks which led to ending breastfeeding early. Pregnant women, and those wanting to be, take heed.. it’s true that things get better at 6 weeks but please dont think that the breastfeeding issues will magically resolve. If you are having pain see someone there and then..GP, lactation consultant, local clinic, whatever.. if I’d had my multiple issues seen to in the first two or three weeks I reckon I would still be going strong with feeding. Instead I waited, thinking that it would all get better in a few weeks and didnt see anyone until I got mastitis. It is NOT normal to have toe-curling pain for the duration of every feed.
Anyway, off my soapbox now. :)
Dr Mel said that next time around my nipples (o0o00) will be tough and ready for action so I’m unlikely to have this sort of trouble again.
I think she’s right. I was thinking of this the other day. Next time I’d have a better idea of what to expect.. what’s normal and what isn’t. But I still can’t wrap my head around having a toddler and a newborn. A couple of days ago Matt said he was happy with just Fraser but then tonight we were talking about what if I was already pregnant again.. we could have 2 kids under 12 months. But I don’t think that’s the case. I will be testing before I go back on the pill though. :)
