Thanks, Melissa. I can thank Twitter, really. SOHI found me when I had mentioned something about Bowral, I think. Then we started tweeting each other regularly. Not long after I quit my IT job and started freelance writing, I had coffee with Rebecca from SOHI and it went from there.

My advice: Start local.
